During the Covid-19 pandemic, the White House has declared agricultural work as central for food supply in the U.S. But coverage proposals being considered by the White House are creating issues, namely by cutting the wages of legal agricultural migrant workers to $8.34 an hour from the current $2-5 an hour wage rate (depending on the State). The pandemic has caused a great deal of debt for many and farmers are no exception.
Temporary agricultural workers enter the U.S. under H-2A visas and are already vulnerable to human trafficking, who pay recruiters a great deal to obtain the H-2A visa. Cutting their wages will make them direct targets to human traffickers who will use their existing debt as a method of control. We, at Youth Underground, encourage everyone to be aware of is happening around them and believe that one voice—YOUR voice—can make a difference, wherever you may be in the world. Listen to what Gee has to say for more details about this specific labor trafficking situation. What do you think?
