Wuhan health officials increase COVID-19 death toll by 50%

At least 50% more people died in the epicenter of the Chinese Wuhan virus than previously counted, with the state media who attributed the initial subtitle on Friday to how overwhelmed the health system was by thousands of sick patients.

Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, has seen the addition of 1,290 victims that have brought the death toll to 3,869 – the most in China – and confirmed the suspicions that many more people died in the city where the disease than previously announced.

Total confirmed cases in the city of 11 million people also increased from 325 to 50,333, representing about two thirds of the total of 82,367 cases announced in China.

Wuhan’s revised figures raised the death toll in China to 4,632, compared to 3,342 announced by the National Health Commission on Friday morning.

The Xinhua news agency cited an unidentified official with the Wuhan epidemic and the prevention and control headquarters stating that during the early stages of the epidemic, “due to insufficient hospitalization and treatment capabilities, some Medical institutions have failed to connect with disease prevention and control systems over time, while hospitals were overloaded and doctors were overwhelmed with patients.

“As a result, late, missed and incorrect reports occurred,” said the official.

The new figures were collected by comparing data from the Wuhan epidemic prevention and control system, the city funeral service, the hospital’s municipal authority and nucleic acid tests to “remove the cases counted twice and fill the lost cases, “said the official.

Deaths outside of hospitals had not been recorded previously and some medical institutions had confirmed the cases but had reported them late or not at all, the official said.

WHO under fire

The questions have long swirled about the accuracy of the case report in China, with Wuhan in particular going on for several days in January without reporting new cases or deaths. This led to allegations that Chinese officials were trying to minimize the impact of the epidemic and to waste opportunities to get it under control in a shorter time.

A group of eight health workers, including a doctor who later died of the virus, were even threatened by the police for trying to warn people about the disease via social media.

Chinese officials severely denied hiding the cases, saying their reports were accurate and timely. However, the United Nations World Health Organization has been criticized for defending the way China has handled the outbreak and President Donald Trump is suspending funding to the WHO for what he claims is his pro-Chinese bias. .

Trump’s blame for China came after he initially spent weeks praising Chinese President Xi Jinping for the country’s pandemic performance, largely rejecting the risk it posed to the United States.

Early in the outbreak, China proceeded cautiously and largely in secret, emphasizing the political stability and leadership of the Communist Party in power of Xi.

More than 3,000 people had been infected before the Chinese government declared to the public that a pandemic was likely, something officials had concluded six days earlier.

The risk of sustained human-to-human transmission was also minimized, although infected people entered hospitals across the country and the first case was found outside of China, Thailand.

Officials also tried to shift the blame to the United States for the outbreak, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian tweeting without evidence on March 12: “It could be the US military that brought the outbreak to Wuhan. the United States owes us an explanation! “
