In 2015 police surrounded Leo Lech’s property that he’d been renting to his son in search of an armed shoplifter who had shot at officers whilst fleeing from a store. After a 19-hour standoff the house was essentially left in ruins by the military-grade weapons used to flush out the suspect. An appeals court upheld an earlier ruling, and threw out the family’s call for compensation, saying officers acted within the powers they’re granted under the law. Local police did offer an apology of sorts, though added ‘peoples’ safety was their main concern’.
Mr Lech says the insurance company did pay out, but it was just a fraction of what was needed to fix the damage.
